Today’s society is increasingly shaped by scientific and technological innovations that have become part of people’s daily lives. Whereas science and technology once merely offered solutions to the problems faced by humanity, today they also contribute to the creation of some of the most pressing problems that need to be solved. The contemporary world is characterized by a landscape of uncertainty, defining a Risk Society. In this context, science education plays a crucial role, as living in a society that creates its own problems requires the ability to assess risk and make decisions.

SPEAKERS AND GUESTS
Olívia Levrini holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in physics. She is a Full Professor of Physics Education and History of Physics in the Augusto Righi Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Bologna. She has coordinated the European projects “I see,” “identities,” and “Fedora,” as well as the EU Fedoras Teachers’ Academy. Her current research interests include interdisciplinarity and a forward-looking approach to STEM education in advanced topics (e.g., climate change, artificial intelligence, quantum computing), cognition and conceptual change, identity, and processes of appropriation.
In 2019, she served as chair of the ESERA 2019 conference. In 2018, she received national certification as a full professor and served as an ambassador for the City of Bologna.
RALPH LEVINSON is a senior professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of London. He is the director of the master’s program in science education and teaching in the master’s and doctoral programs, and a professor in the master’s and PGCE programs, as well as in continuing professional development courses. His main research interests include socioscientific issues and scientific literacy, science and social justice, science education and creativity, chemistry education, and science pedagogy. Prof. Levinson has also led research projects for major organizations such as the World Bank, the Wellcome Trust, and the British Academy, in addition to participating in various European Union projects.
